Benefits and Risks of Physiotherapy

RISKS AND BENEFITS OF PHYSIOTHERAPY

INFORMED CONSENT

Before proceeding with Physiotherapy, it is essential for patients to be fully informed about the potential risks and benefits involved in their treatment. Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession focused on optimising physical function, mobility, and well-being. Physiotherapists use a range of techniques and modalities to assess, diagnose, and treat various musculoskeletal and neurological conditions.

This document outlines the potential risks and benefits to help you make an informed decision about undergoing Physiotherapy

Benefits of Physiotherapy:

1   **Pain Relief**:                 Physiotherapy can help alleviate pain and discomfort associated with injuries, chronic conditions, and post-surgical recovery.

2  **Improved Mobility**: Physiotherapists work to enhance joint flexibility, muscle strength, and overall physical function, leading to better mobility and range of motion.

3  **Rehabilitation**: Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation process after surgeries, accidents, or sports injuries, helping you recover and regain functionality.

4  **Injury Prevention**: Physiotherapists can provide advice and exercises to prevent injuries and promote healthy movement patterns.

5   **Customised Treatment**: Each Physiotherapy session is tailored to meet your specific needs, ensuring personalized care, and addressing your unique concerns.

Risks of Physiotherapy:

1.**Muscle Soreness**: Certain Physiotherapy exercises and techniques may cause mild muscle soreness or discomfort as your body adjusts to the treatment. This often improves with time and treatment, but please do inform your therapist if you are unsure at any stage.

2.**Fatigue**: Physiotherapy sessions may leave you feeling tired, especially if the treatment involves active exercises. We recommend planning your diary accordingly if you do find you feel fatigued after treatment.

3. **Temporary Worsening of Symptoms**: In some cases, Physiotherapy treatment may temporarily worsen symptoms before improvement occurs. This effect is typically short-lived and does not mean anything is wrong. We expect it to last no longer than 72 hours. Please contact us if you are unsure if what your experiencing is normal.

4.**Individual Response**: Each person responds differently to Physiotherapy, and outcomes may vary based on individual health, compliance, and other factors.

5.**Bruising or Redness**: In some cases, individuals may notice temporary bruising or redness in the treated areas, or away from the area due to the nature of gravity. This can be more common if you bruise easily, and we would recommend treating it with some ice/cold compress for 24 hours after treatment.

6. **Allergic Reactions**: Although uncommon, some individuals might have allergies to certain massage oils or lotions used during soft tissue therapy. Please inform your therapist of any known allergies before the session.

7. **Risk of Infection**: Proper hygiene and sanitation practices are followed by therapists to minimize the risk of infection. However, it's essential to discuss any skin conditions or open wounds before the treatment.

8. **Risk of fainting**: in rare instances, patients may be lightheaded after treatment, and we would encourage you to sit and enjoy a glass of water if this is the case.

9. **Pregnancy Considerations**: Pregnant individuals should inform their therapist about their pregnancy, as certain techniques might not be suitable during pregnancy.
